AGUEZNAY Malika

: Morocco
Born : 1938 in Marrakech

Malika Agueznay is a Moroccan visual artist, born in 1934 in Marrakech, recognized as one of the pioneers of modern and abstract art in Morocco. After an initial scientific education, she enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca in 1966, where she took part in the modernist movement that redefined the codes of Moroccan artistic creation, integrating form, line, geometry, and pure color into an abstract visual language.

Agueznay developed the motif of seaweed as a central element in her work, a biomorphic and organic form explored through painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Beyond her abstract works, she has created significant public projects, including mural paintings, and has influenced several generations of artists.

In 1978, she discovered printmaking in Asilah, freeing her practice from traditional representation, and later perfected this technique in New York in prestigious studios, working with renowned master printmakers.

She subsequently taught and led printmaking workshops for many years, consolidating her central role in Moroccan artistic life.

Malika Agueznay has presented her work in major solo exhibitions as well as in historic group shows at leading cultural institutions in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, celebrating Moroccan abstraction and avant-garde art.
