Ahmed Balili was born in 1955 in the Ben Salah quarter, at the heart of the old medina of Marrakech, the third child of a craftsman who made babouches, and died in that same city on 30 May 2026. His childhood was marked by the death of his mother when he was three; the shock left him with a stammer he carried all his life, keeping him at a remove \u2014 a man of observation rather than of speech. He never attended an art school. His training came from his father's workshop and above all from the Marrakech street: souks, squares, processions, the collective life of a city permanently on display.<\/p>\n
He began exhibiting in Casablanca in the early 1980s. Institutional recognition arrived in 1989 with his inclusion in \"30 Moroccan Painters,\" staged at the Bahia Palace in Marrakech for the sixtieth birthday of King Hassan II \u2014 a selection that placed him alongside the established figures of his generation. He went on to feature in the inaugural exhibition of the Museum of Marrakech in 1996, then at the Sharjah International Biennial in 1997, before the National Exhibition of Visual Arts in Casablanca and the Marrakech International Art Festival in 2005. His presence held late: the MACMA museum selected him in 2017 for an exhibition on the depiction of women by Moroccan painters, and later for its survey displays. A monograph was devoted to him, with an essay by the anthropologist Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Cl\u00e9ment.<\/p>\n
His subject stayed the same for forty years: the moment the city gathers. Markets, moussems, weddings, Mouloud festivities, horsemen, journeys back to the village \u2014 Balili rarely painted ordinary life, but life in celebration, the kind that generates crowds and motion. His figuration is nonetheless never descriptive. He builds in blocks, stacking silhouettes in layers, compressing groups until the human mass becomes a pictorial architecture. The palette is sober, dominated by earths and ochres cut through with sharper accents; forms are reduced to a supple geometry. However dense the gathering, each figure keeps its own contour: nothing blurs, everything is set side by side.<\/p>\n
Self-taught among graduates, reticent among public figures, Balili occupies the place of a chronicler in Moroccan painting: across four decades his work amounts to a visual inventory of the collective rituals of Marrakech and its region. His canvases and gouaches appear regularly at international auction, notably at Millon and Christie's, where they are identified by a signature written in both Arabic and Latin script, and are held in many private collections in Morocco and abroad.
