class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Ahmed Balili was born in 1955 in the Ben Salah quarter, at the heart of the old medina of Marrakech, the third child of a craftsman who made babouches, and died in that same city on 30 May 2026. His childhood was marked by the death of his mother when he was three; the shock left him with a stammer he carried all his life, keeping him at a remove \u2014 a man of observation rather than of speech. He never attended an art school. His training came from his father's workshop and above all from the Marrakech street: souks, squares, processions, the collective life of a city permanently on display.<\/p><p>He began exhibiting in Casablanca in the early 1980s. Institutional recognition arrived in 1989 with his inclusion in \"30 Moroccan Painters,\" staged at the Bahia Palace in Marrakech for the sixtieth birthday of King Hassan II \u2014 a selection that placed him alongside the established figures of his generation. He went on to feature in the inaugural exhibition of the Museum of Marrakech in 1996, then at the Sharjah International Biennial in 1997, before the National Exhibition of Visual Arts in Casablanca and the Marrakech International Art Festival in 2005. His presence held late: the MACMA museum selected him in 2017 for an exhibition on the depiction of women by Moroccan painters, and later for its survey displays. A monograph was devoted to him, with an essay by the anthropologist Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Cl\u00e9ment.<\/p><p>His subject stayed the same for forty years: the moment the city gathers. Markets, moussems, weddings, Mouloud festivities, horsemen, journeys back to the village \u2014 Balili rarely painted ordinary life, but life in celebration, the kind that generates crowds and motion. His figuration is nonetheless never descriptive. He builds in blocks, stacking silhouettes in layers, compressing groups until the human mass becomes a pictorial architecture. The palette is sober, dominated by earths and ochres cut through with sharper accents; forms are reduced to a supple geometry. However dense the gathering, each figure keeps its own contour: nothing blurs, everything is set side by side.<\/p><p>Self-taught among graduates, reticent among public figures, Balili occupies the place of a chronicler in Moroccan painting: across four decades his work amounts to a visual inventory of the collective rituals of Marrakech and its region. His canvases and gouaches appear regularly at international auction, notably at Millon and Christie's, where they are identified by a signature written in both Arabic and Latin script, and are held in many private collections in Morocco and abroad. His childhood was marked by the death of his mother when he was three; the shock left him with a stammer he carried all his life, keeping him at a remove \u2014 a man of observation rather than of speech. He never attended an art school. Institutional recognition arrived in 1989 with his inclusion in \"30 Moroccan Painters,\" staged at the Bahia Palace in Marrakech for the sixtieth birthday of King Hassan II \u2014 a selection that placed him alongside the established figures of his generation. He went on to feature in the inaugural exhibition of the Museum of Marrakech in 1996, then at the Sharjah International Biennial in 1997, before the National Exhibition of Visual Arts in Casablanca and the Marrakech International Art Festival in 2005. His presence held late: the MACMA museum selected him in 2017 for an exhibition on the depiction of women by Moroccan painters, and later for its survey displays. His figuration is nonetheless never descriptive. He builds in blocks, stacking silhouettes in layers, compressing groups until the human mass becomes a pictorial architecture. The palette is sober, dominated by earths and ochres cut through with sharper accents; forms are reduced to a supple geometry. However dense the gathering, each figure keeps its own contour: nothing blurs, everything is set side by side.<\/p><p>Self-taught among graduates, reticent among public figures, Balili occupies the place of a chronicler in Moroccan painting: across four decades his work amounts to a visual inventory of the collective rituals of Marrakech and its region. Il figure ensuite \u00e0 l\u2019exposition inaugurale du Mus\u00e9e de Marrakech en 1996, puis \u00e0 la Biennale internationale de Sharjah en 1997, avant la Grande exposition nationale des arts plastiques de Casablanca et le Festival international d\u2019art de Marrakech en 2005. Sa pr\u00e9sence se maintient tard : le mus\u00e9e MACMA le retient en 2017 pour une exposition consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la repr\u00e9sentation des femmes par les peintres marocains, puis dans ses accrochages patrimoniaux. Une monographie lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 consacr\u00e9e, avec un essai de l\u2019anthropologue Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Cl\u00e9ment.Son sujet est rest\u00e9 le m\u00eame pendant quarante ans : le moment o\u00f9 la ville se rassemble. March\u00e9s, moussems, noces, c\u00e9l\u00e9brations du Mouloud, cavaliers, retours au village \u2014 Balili peint rarement la vie ordinaire, mais la vie en f\u00eate, celle qui produit de la foule et du mouvement. Sa figuration n\u2019est pourtant jamais descriptive. Il construit par blocs, empile les silhouettes en strates, resserre les groupes jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que la masse humaine devienne une architecture picturale. La palette est sobre, domin\u00e9e par des terres et des ocres travers\u00e9s d\u2019accents plus vifs ; les formes sont ramen\u00e9es \u00e0 une g\u00e9om\u00e9trie souple. Malgr\u00e9 la densit\u00e9 des rassemblements, chaque figure conserve son contour propre : rien ne se fond, tout se juxtapose.Autodidacte parmi les dipl\u00f4m\u00e9s, discret parmi les figures publiques, Balili occupe dans la peinture marocaine une place de chroniqueur : son \u0153uvre constitue, sur quatre d\u00e9cennies, un inventaire visuel des rituels collectifs de Marrakech et de sa r\u00e9gion. Son enfance est marqu\u00e9e par la disparition de sa m\u00e8re alors qu\u2019il a trois ans ; de ce choc lui reste un b\u00e9gaiement dont il souffrira toute sa vie et qui le tiendra en retrait, homme d\u2019observation plut\u00f4t que de parole. Il ne fr\u00e9quentera jamais d\u2019\u00e9cole des beaux-arts. Sa formation se fait dans l\u2019atelier paternel et surtout dans la rue marrakchie : souks, places, cort\u00e8ges, vie collective d\u2019une ville en spectacle permanent.Il commence \u00e0 exposer au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1980 \u00e0 Casablanca. La reconnaissance institutionnelle vient en 1989 avec sa participation \u00e0 l\u2019exposition \u00ab 30 peintres marocains \u00bb, organis\u00e9e au Palais Bahia de Marrakech pour le soixanti\u00e8me anniversaire du roi Hassan II \u2014 une s\u00e9lection qui l\u2019installe aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des figures \u00e9tablies de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Il figure ensuite \u00e0 l\u2019exposition inaugurale du Mus\u00e9e de Marrakech en 1996, puis \u00e0 la Biennale internationale de Sharjah en 1997, avant la Grande exposition nationale des arts plastiques de Casablanca et le Festival international d\u2019art de Marrakech en 2005. Sa pr\u00e9sence se maintient tard : le mus\u00e9e MACMA le retient en 2017 pour une exposition consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la repr\u00e9sentation des femmes par les peintres marocains, puis dans ses accrochages patrimoniaux. Une monographie lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 consacr\u00e9e, avec un essai de l\u2019anthropologue Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Cl\u00e9ment.Son sujet est rest\u00e9 le m\u00eame pendant quarante ans : le moment o\u00f9 la ville se rassemble. March\u00e9s, moussems, noces, c\u00e9l\u00e9brations du Mouloud, cavaliers, retours au village \u2014 Balili peint rarement la vie ordinaire, mais la vie en f\u00eate, celle qui produit de la foule et du mouvement. Sa figuration n\u2019est pourtant jamais descriptive. Il construit par blocs, empile les silhouettes en strates, resserre les groupes jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que la masse humaine devienne une architecture picturale. La palette est sobre, domin\u00e9e par des terres et des ocres travers\u00e9s d\u2019accents plus vifs ; les formes sont ramen\u00e9es \u00e0 une g\u00e9om\u00e9trie souple. Malgr\u00e9 la densit\u00e9 des rassemblements, chaque figure conserve son contour propre : rien ne se fond, tout se juxtapose.Autodidacte parmi les dipl\u00f4m\u00e9s, discret parmi les figures publiques, Balili occupe dans la peinture marocaine une place de chroniqueur : son \u0153uvre constitue, sur quatre d\u00e9cennies, un inventaire visuel des rituels collectifs de Marrakech et de sa r\u00e9gion. Ses toiles et gouaches passent r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement en vente publique \u00e0 l\u2019international, notamment chez Millon et Christie\u2019s, o\u00f9 elles sont identifi\u00e9es par une signature port\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois en caract\u00e8res arabes et latins, et figurent dans de nombreuses collections priv\u00e9es au Maroc et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger.
