class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Bouchta El Hayani was born in 1952 in Taounate, a small town in Morocco's pre-Rif region, far from the country's artistic centres. He entered painting through the applied arts, training at the \u00c9cole des Arts Appliqu\u00e9s in Casablanca in decoration and graphic arts. That training \u2014 closer to workshop than academy \u2014 left a decisive mark: drawing would never be a preparatory stage for him but the very matrix of the painting. He exhibited for the first time in 1970, aged eighteen, at the Salon des Artistes Ind\u00e9pendants in Casablanca. He soon joined the Centre P\u00e9dagogique R\u00e9gional in Rabat, where he taught for many years, later working at the National School of Architecture as well.<\/p><p>His career took shape in the Rabat of the 1970s and 1980s, when the Moroccan scene was consumed by a pressing question: on what terms can a painting be both modern and Moroccan? Working as an illustrator for the magazine Al Assas, he kept close company with Mohamed Kacimi, Fouad Bellamine, Miloud Labied and Hassan Slaoui. He took part in the major events of the period: the Bab Rouah National Gallery from 1976, five Moroccan painters in Milan and Brussels in 1977, the first Tunis Biennial and the Asilah Festival in 1981, the Oudayas Museum in 1982, Moroccan Cultural Week in Dakar in 1984, Cairo in 1988. In 1998, a stay at the Cit\u00e9 Internationale des Arts in Paris marked a reflective pause mid-career.<\/p><p>The trajectory is not linear, and that is what makes it interesting. A long period of non-figurative expressionism, where line dissolves into a densely worked surface, gives way to a phase of heightened attention to support and texture, before a frontal return to the figure from the 2000s onward. Bodies reappear standing, vertical, framed by drawing that no longer hides behind colour, in a space without setting and often without faces: presences rather than portraits. Where many painters of his generation sought legitimacy in traditional signs, El Hayani held a lonelier position, working his inheritance through displacement rather than quotation.<\/p><p>Fifty years of practice have earned him a singular place in the history of Moroccan painting: that of an artist who resists classification, yet whose every period remains recognisable by the quality of the line. His works are held in numerous public and private collections in Morocco and abroad, and have been the subject of several monographs. A major retrospective in Casablanca made it possible to measure the underlying coherence of a body of work whose variety of manners might otherwise suggest discontinuity. He entered painting through the applied arts, training at the \u00c9cole des Arts Appliqu\u00e9s in Casablanca in decoration and graphic arts. That training \u2014 closer to workshop than academy \u2014 left a decisive mark: drawing would never be a preparatory stage for him but the very matrix of the painting. He exhibited for the first time in 1970, aged eighteen, at the Salon des Artistes Ind\u00e9pendants in Casablanca. He soon joined the Centre P\u00e9dagogique R\u00e9gional in Rabat, where he taught for many years, later working at the National School of Architecture as well.<\/p><p>His career took shape in the Rabat of the 1970s and 1980s, when the Moroccan scene was consumed by a pressing question: on what terms can a painting be both modern and Moroccan? Working as an illustrator for the magazine Al Assas, he kept close company with Mohamed Kacimi, Fouad Bellamine, Miloud Labied and Hassan Slaoui. He took part in the major events of the period: the Bab Rouah National Gallery from 1976, five Moroccan painters in Milan and Brussels in 1977, the first Tunis Biennial and the Asilah Festival in 1981, the Oudayas Museum in 1982, Moroccan Cultural Week in Dakar in 1984, Cairo in 1988. In 1998, a stay at the Cit\u00e9 Internationale des Arts in Paris marked a reflective pause mid-career.<\/p><p>The trajectory is not linear, and that is what makes it interesting. A long period of non-figurative expressionism, where line dissolves into a densely worked surface, gives way to a phase of heightened attention to support and texture, before a frontal return to the figure from the 2000s onward. Bodies reappear standing, vertical, framed by drawing that no longer hides behind colour, in a space without setting and often without faces: presences rather than portraits. Where many painters of his generation sought legitimacy in traditional signs, El Hayani held a lonelier position, working his inheritance through displacement rather than quotation.<\/p><p>Fifty years of practice have earned him a singular place in the history of Moroccan painting: that of an artist who resists classification, yet whose every period remains recognisable by the quality of the line. His works are held in numerous public and private collections in Morocco and abroad, and have been the subject of several monographs. A major retrospective in Casablanca made it possible to measure the underlying coherence of a body of work whose variety of manners might otherwise suggest discontinuity. Il rejoint peu apr\u00e8s le Centre p\u00e9dagogique r\u00e9gional de Rabat, o\u00f9 il enseignera durablement, avant d\u2019intervenir aussi \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole nationale d\u2019architecture.Sa carri\u00e8re se construit dans le Rabat des ann\u00e9es 1970 et 1980, alors que la sc\u00e8ne marocaine est travers\u00e9e par une question br\u00fblante : \u00e0 quelles conditions une peinture peut-elle \u00eatre \u00e0 la fois moderne et marocaine ? Illustrateur pour la revue Al Assas, il c\u00f4toie de pr\u00e8s Mohamed Kacimi, Fouad Bellamine, Miloud Labied et Hassan Slaoui. Il participe aux grandes manifestations de la p\u00e9riode : la Galerie nationale Bab Rouah d\u00e8s 1976, cinq peintres marocains \u00e0 Milan et Bruxelles en 1977, la premi\u00e8re Biennale de Tunis et le Festival d\u2019Asilah en 1981, le Mus\u00e9e des Oudayas en 1982, la Semaine culturelle du Maroc \u00e0 Dakar en 1984, Le Caire en 1988. En 1998, un s\u00e9jour \u00e0 la Cit\u00e9 internationale des arts de Paris marque une pause r\u00e9flexive au milieu du parcours.Ce parcours n\u2019est pas lin\u00e9aire, et c\u2019est ce qui en fait l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat. On y distingue une longue p\u00e9riode d\u2019expressionnisme non figuratif, o\u00f9 la ligne se dissout dans une mati\u00e8re travaill\u00e9e en profondeur, puis un temps d\u2019attention accrue au support et \u00e0 la texture, avant un retour frontal \u00e0 la figure \u00e0 partir des ann\u00e9es 2000. Il entre en peinture par la voie appliqu\u00e9e, se formant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole des arts appliqu\u00e9s de Casablanca en d\u00e9coration et arts graphiques. Cette formation, plus artisanale qu\u2019acad\u00e9mique, laisse une empreinte d\u00e9cisive : chez lui, le dessin ne sera jamais une \u00e9tape pr\u00e9paratoire mais la matrice m\u00eame du tableau. Il expose pour la premi\u00e8re fois en 1970, \u00e0 dix-huit ans, au Salon des artistes ind\u00e9pendants de Casablanca. Il rejoint peu apr\u00e8s le Centre p\u00e9dagogique r\u00e9gional de Rabat, o\u00f9 il enseignera durablement, avant d\u2019intervenir aussi \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole nationale d\u2019architecture.Sa carri\u00e8re se construit dans le Rabat des ann\u00e9es 1970 et 1980, alors que la sc\u00e8ne marocaine est travers\u00e9e par une question br\u00fblante : \u00e0 quelles conditions une peinture peut-elle \u00eatre \u00e0 la fois moderne et marocaine ? Illustrateur pour la revue Al Assas, il c\u00f4toie de pr\u00e8s Mohamed Kacimi, Fouad Bellamine, Miloud Labied et Hassan Slaoui. Il participe aux grandes manifestations de la p\u00e9riode : la Galerie nationale Bab Rouah d\u00e8s 1976, cinq peintres marocains \u00e0 Milan et Bruxelles en 1977, la premi\u00e8re Biennale de Tunis et le Festival d\u2019Asilah en 1981, le Mus\u00e9e des Oudayas en 1982, la Semaine culturelle du Maroc \u00e0 Dakar en 1984, Le Caire en 1988. En 1998, un s\u00e9jour \u00e0 la Cit\u00e9 internationale des arts de Paris marque une pause r\u00e9flexive au milieu du parcours.Ce parcours n\u2019est pas lin\u00e9aire, et c\u2019est ce qui en fait l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat. On y distingue une longue p\u00e9riode d\u2019expressionnisme non figuratif, o\u00f9 la ligne se dissout dans une mati\u00e8re travaill\u00e9e en profondeur, puis un temps d\u2019attention accrue au support et \u00e0 la texture, avant un retour frontal \u00e0 la figure \u00e0 partir des ann\u00e9es 2000. Les corps r\u00e9apparaissent debout, verticaux, cern\u00e9s par un dessin qui ne se dissimule plus derri\u00e8re la couleur, dans un espace sans d\u00e9cor et souvent sans visage : ce sont des pr\u00e9sences, non des portraits. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 beaucoup de peintres de sa g\u00e9n\u00e9ration ont cherch\u00e9 leur l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9 dans le signe traditionnel, El Hayani a tenu une position plus solitaire, travaillant l\u2019h\u00e9ritage par d\u00e9placement plut\u00f4t que par citation.Cinquante ann\u00e9es de pratique lui ont valu une place singuli\u00e8re dans l\u2019histoire de la peinture marocaine : celle d\u2019un artiste inclassable, dont chaque p\u00e9riode reste pourtant reconnaissable \u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 du trait. Ses \u0153uvres figurent dans de nombreuses collections publiques et priv\u00e9es, au Maroc comme \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger, et ont fait l\u2019objet de plusieurs monographies.
