Born: 1963 in Casablanca.

Amina Benbouchta is a Moroccan painter. She earned a degree in anthropology in Montreal and, alongside her artistic practice, attended drawing, lithography, and printmaking workshops in Paris. From 1988 to 1990, she was also a visiting student at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris.

She has forged a singular path within the landscape of contemporary Moroccan art. While continuing to pursue painting, with its demanding traditions and codes, she simultaneously develops a body of work focused on volume and the occupation of space. Her creations belong to an intimate universe, offering poetic readings at first glance, before inviting viewers to confront the complexity of societal expectations and personal identity. Her approach is deeply informed by her training in anthropology, which shapes her perspective on everyday objects and their symbolic charge.

Since 1986, her works have been presented in Morocco and internationally in numerous contemporary art institutions and events, including the Cairo Biennale (1993), the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington (1997), the Kerava Museum in Finland (2003), as well as the Brussels and Marrakech art fairs (2010), among others. In 2005, she co-founded the Collectif 212 alongside artists and curators, with the aim of supporting the emergence of contemporary art in Morocco.
