MATINI Hicham

Hicham Matini is a Moroccan visual artist, a graduate of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tétouan (2014). Based in Fez, he belongs to an emerging generation of artists who critically examine contemporary issues surrounding visual representation.

His work—both avant-garde and socially engaged—explores the cultural hegemony of images and their impact on public discourse, in relation to geopolitical issues, urban violence, and generational conflicts. Working across various media, particularly painting, Matini investigates the relationship between the viewer and the media, shedding light on mechanisms of fragmentation, repetition, and the distractive nature of contemporary imagery.

Drawing on collective imagination and popular references, he reinterprets symbols of cultural memory to reveal the dialectic between tradition and modernity. His often abstract visual language offers new frameworks of interpretation at a time when the virality of images tends to outweigh their veracity.

Since 2010, Hicham Matini has taken part in numerous group exhibitions in Morocco and internationally, including the 5th Marrakech Biennale, the Museum of New Art Armada in Detroit, the Festival of Arts and Music in Tulum, Mexico, as well as exhibitions in contemporary art centers in Spain and the United States.
