Mouad EL BISSAOUI

Born and based in Marrakech, Mouad EL BISSAOUI is a multidisciplinary conceptual artist whose work spans drawing, installation, performance and sculpture. A graduate of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tétouan (INBA) in 2022, he quickly distinguished himself on the Moroccan art scene. The same year, he was awarded the Prix Mustaqbal for Contemporary Art in Morocco as well as the Moroccan Prize for Young Creation, recognitions that affirmed the depth and originality of his artistic voice. His academic training, enriched by the guidance of notable mentors, shaped an approach in which poetic rhythm meets rigorous visual inquiry.
EL BISSAOUI’s practice is characterized by a strong conceptual foundation and a critical engagement with contemporary social, political, and economic structures. Much of his work refers to themes of war, burnt remnants, and the fragility of human existence. Charcoal, a material both organic and symbolic, occupies a central place in his oeuvre. It becomes a witness to traces, burns, silences, and transformations — a medium through which he interrogates boundaries, memory, identity, and the tension between destruction and rebirth.
Symbolism plays a significant role in his visual language. The game of chess, for instance, recurs as a metaphor for power dynamics, strategy, solitude, and decision-making. His reflections are also deeply influenced by Arabic writing and poetry, which, even when not explicitly visible, permeate the conceptual structure of his work. Through this interplay of mediums, symbols, and cultural references, EL BISSAOUI crafts a body of work that invites viewers to rethink mechanisms of manipulation and the forces shaping collective consciousness.
In 2024, he received the prestigious Eeckman Art Prize in Brussels, expanding his international recognition. His work has since been exhibited abroad, including in Paris, Geneva, Monaco, and Brussels, positioning him among the rising voices of contemporary Moroccan art. EL BISSAOUI continues to develop a visual discourse rooted in critical thought, material experimentation, and a profound sensitivity to the human condition.
