Artiste EL GAOUZI Abid
- EL GAOUZI Abid: Morocco
Born : 1962 in Essaouira
Abid El Gaouzi, born in 1962 in Essaouira—where he continues to live and work—is a self-taught Moroccan painter whose artistic language draws deeply from the visual, cultural, and popular memory of his homeland. Fascinated by traditional art, collective rituals, and the energy of everyday life, he has developed a distinctive pictorial style marked by rhythm, abundance, and storytelling.
In his large-scale compositions, Abid El Gaouzi brings to life a vibrant choreography of characters, multiplied and intertwined like a living mosaic. His expressive figures, draped in dazzling colors and adorned with geometric motifs, form a visual alphabet inspired by Souiri traditions, festive gatherings, processions, and the ceremonial life of Morocco.
Color is one of his most powerful tools: through bold palettes, contrasting tones, and rhythmic chromatic structures, he creates paintings that pulse with movement and emotion. Stylized architectural motifs—arches, pavilions, ceremonial platforms—appear like recurring symbols, anchoring his compositions while amplifying their celebratory energy.
Each artwork unfolds like an ever-expanding celebration: a scene where humanity fills the entire surface, overflowing with life, gesture, and narrative. The density is intentional—never chaotic—offering harmony through multiplicity and inviting the viewer to dive into countless intertwined stories.
Festive and luminous, Abid El Gaouzi’s paintings captivate instantly. They awaken collective memories, spark curiosity, and rekindle the viewer’s sense of wonder, even in the most fatigued eyes.
He has exhibited in Casablanca (2008), Marrakech (2011), and Essaouira (2013). Today, his work stands as one of the most distinctive and heartfelt tributes to Moroccan popular creativity—a celebration of memory, movement, and modernity.
