Born in 1968 in Marrakech, Salah Benjkan is a painter and visual arts instructor. A laureate of the Wafabank Foundation in 1993 and recipient of the Moroccan Young Painting Prize in 1995, he quickly distinguished himself as one of the notable artistic voices of his generation.

Benjkan’s art weaves together modernity and tradition. Whether working in abstraction or figuration, his painting is marked by dynamic forms and a vivid, luminous color palette. His compositions are built around the force of light—its contrasts, its diffusion, and the way it reveals or transforms surfaces and shapes. Often, the figure in his work tends toward abstraction, a deliberate choice meant to both purify and intensify the visible.

In recent years, the artist has turned his attention to elements of the real—objects, traces, and fragments—which he deconstructs and redistributes across the canvas. The painted forms may appear distorted or anonymized, dissolving into a state of disappearance. His approach, free, gestural, and deeply suggestive, encourages the viewer to reconstruct what has been intentionally obscured.

Dreamlike and introspective, Benjkan’s work opens onto a wide range of themes: subjective, mythical, and abstract. Each piece reveals a delicate sensitivity and a meticulous creative process, giving his universe a distinct emotional and conceptual depth. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, affirming the reach and maturity of his artistic practice.
