EL ATRACH Abdellah

Abdellah El Atrach is a Moroccan painter born near Essaouira. After several years of study, he worked in various manual trades—including marquetry, sculpture, and pastry-making—before fully devoting himself to painting. Deeply rooted in popular culture and local traditions, he draws his inspiration from the rituals and legends of southern Morocco, particularly the trance ceremonies of the Aïssaoua, where men and women are carried away by musical rhythms.

His pictorial universe is characterized by dense, vibrant compositions populated with human, animal, and fantastical figures, often interconnected through symbolic motifs and scenes that evoke a true “waking dream,” situated between the marvelous, the mystical, and the collective imagination. His work develops a strongly anthropological approach that goes beyond the framework of classical surrealism.

His paintings have found their place on both the Moroccan and international art scenes, as evidenced by his numerous exhibitions, notably in Casablanca, Marrakech, Rabat, as well as in Spain and the Netherlands.

Abdellah El Atrach is today recognized as a singular figure in contemporary Moroccan painting, distinguished by a unique style that blends mythical imagination, popular culture, and visual symbolism.
